Kasindi–Beni–Butembo Corridor
Upgrading 134 kilometres of the Great Lakes region's busiest cross-border trade route — from the Uganda–DRC border at Kasindi, through Bulongo and Beni, to the commercial hub of Butembo in North Kivu province.
The trade artery of the Great Lakes.
The Kasindi–Beni–Butembo highway is the economic lifeline of the DRC's North Kivu province. It begins at Kasindi, the country's busiest eastern border post with Uganda, runs north-west through Bulongo to the city of Beni, then turns south-west to Butembo — one of eastern Congo's great commercial centres.
For years, the road's poor condition has been a brake on the region's potential: slowing the export of coffee, cocoa and agricultural produce to Uganda and the East African market, raising transport costs for traders on both sides of the border, and cutting communities off from services.
Uhuru Infrastructure is developing the corridor's upgrading to an all-weather paved standard as a PPP Build-Operate-Transfer concession — backed by a full traffic study and economic evaluation completed in 2026, and coordinated with the governments and road authorities of the region.
Three sections, one route to market.
The corridor is developed and analysed in three sections, each with its own traffic profile — from the border crossing at Kasindi to the commercial heart of Butembo.
| Section | From — To | Character | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| S01 | Kasindi → Bulongo | Border-post approach carrying cross-border freight from the Uganda side | Under construction |
| S02 | Bulongo → Beni | Link to Beni city — administrative and logistics centre of the area | Under construction |
| S03 | Beni → Butembo | The corridor's busiest stretch, serving Butembo's major trading economy | To be advanced under the concession |
Works on the Kasindi–Beni sections are being undertaken by DOTT Services Limited; the Beni–Butembo section is the focus of significant further development under the PPP-BOT structure.
Why this road moves a region.
North Kivu's economy runs on agriculture, mining and cross-border trade. Every one of them depends on this corridor.
Coffee, cocoa and agricultural commodities flow through the Kasindi border post to Uganda and the wider East African Community — the corridor is their route to market.
An all-weather road unlocks induced investment: farms, small and medium enterprises and larger firms locating along a corridor they can finally rely on.
Stronger connectivity between the DRC and Uganda supports regional integration and stability in eastern DRC — commerce where distance and isolation once ruled.
What the project will deliver.
The corridor's purpose, as established by the traffic study and economic evaluation.
All-weather reliability
Upgrading 134 km to an all-weather paved standard — ending the seasonal closures and punishing surface conditions that throttle freight movement today.
Lower transport costs
Reduced vehicle operating costs and journey times for the trucks, buses and motorcycles that carry the region's people and produce.
Boosted cross-border trade
Faster, more predictable movement through the Kasindi border post — deepening trade between the DRC, Uganda and the East African Community.
Growth the region can build on
Wider economic impacts — induced investment, new enterprise and improved access to services — for the millions who live in the corridor's influence area.
Project status.
